Historic Center
The city of Santiago offers a spectacular monumental ensemble. Its monasteries, temples, palaces, ancient streets, and typical popular constructions, combined with its spiritual and cultural significance, have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The history of Santiago begins in the year 813 when the Bishop of Iria verifies the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle Saint James in a village, San Fiz de Solovio, which would eventually transform into the city of Santiago de Compostela. The name Jacobo (Iacobus in Latin) derives in multiple names according to different languages: Jacobo, Iago, Yago, Tiago, Diego, Xacobe, Jaime, Jaume, Jacob, Jakob, Jacques, or James. Thus, the city of the Apostle Saint James, or San Iago, or San Tiago... ends up being known as Santiago. The news of the discovery quickly spreads throughout Christendom and a large basilica is built over the Apostle's tomb, establishing a continuous flow of pilgrims between Santiago and the rest of Europe. Faith, culture, commerce, and politics circulate. Santiago de Compostela and its Camino become the "Root and Foundation of Europe".

The City of Culture of Galicia (Cidade da Cultura de Galicia)
The City of Culture of Galicia (Cidade da Cultura de Galicia) is a spectacular architectural proposal. Designed by the renowned architect Peter Eisenman, it is majestically situated on the top of Mount Gaiás, to the east of Santiago de Compostela, and is a must-see if you visit the city. It houses the library, Museum of Galicia, and offers a diverse program of exhibitions, concerts, conferences, cinema, workshops, seminars, and cutting-edge cultural projects... every day of the year.
